The Crown Jewel Of British Surfing

Of course I’m talking about the Relentless Boardmasters. A contest with a long and distinct history and awesome vibe on the beach and in the town after.

It’s held in the UK’s surf capital of Newquay, Cornwall and attracts riders from all over the globe to compete for the prize money and points on offer.

However, as I have been twice myself (and am planning on going again this year after missing the last 2) the contest is almost always held in small, crumbly waves that do not showcase the power and majesty of the UK’s many breaks. Recently the O’neil Coldwater Classic was held in Scotland at Thurso East in amazing barreling conditions, giving the pro’s something to attack and led to many memorable tube rides and even a couple of airs!

Unfortunately I doubt this will the case in early August when the Boardmasters is on, it’s just a poor time for swell in the UK but contest organisers have to weigh up the options of pumping surf mid-winter or thousands upon thousands of holiday makers to sell tickets and t-shirts to. In this age of money driven consumerism it’s obvious which option wins…

Still if you are down there the surf might not be worldclass but the event sure is so check it out: http://www.boardmasters.co.uk/
